Launch of a new insect-based food range
Carrefour launches the sale of a new insect-based range of food products in Spain. The aim of this new range is to offer consumers the most innovative food products and incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives into the product mix.
Carrefour is launching a total of 10 items, including energy bars, snacks, pasta and granola. These products are made entirely in Europe to the highest quality standards, using a manual process and ingredients from organic farming.
The products are packaged in recycled paper with detailed information on the ingredients, as well as their nutritional value. Customers will also be offered information on the advantages associated with their consumption on a nutritional and environmental level.
A nutritious and sustainable trend-setting product
The consumption of insects is a growing food trend today. On 1 January 2018, European legislation classified inspects as a “new food” and, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), one that already forms part of the diet of over 2,000 million people worldwide, which is why it is considered “the food of the future”.
According to this organization, they are rich in proteins, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, contain omega 3 and 6, all essential amino acids and are an important source of minerals such as iron.
As regards the environmental benefits, their production involves the emission of 99% less green-house gas and minimizes contamination and the consumption of water.
